Department of Ophthalmology, AIIMS Patna came into existence on 18th February 2014. In first phase of recruitment, no faculty joined this department. Department was running by Senior Residents providing basic Ophthalmology services with few basic equipment. After Joining of three faculties in second phase of recruitment after January 2018, holistic development of department started. Presently, the department has 6 faculty members.
The department has been shifted to dedicated OPD wing in January 2018. The department runs OPD on all working days (Monday to Saturday). Department also runs special clinic of cornea and ocular surface disorders, Vitreo-Retina with Uvea, Oculoplasty, Paediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus, Ocular oncology, Lens and Glaucoma clinics on different days simultaneously with routine OPD. Department has been allotted two dedicated modular OT in New OT complex and 30 bedded dedicated eye ward with modern amenities. 10 bedded Ophthalmology Day Care ward has been started in September 2021.
Department got permission to start postgraduate course in Ophthalmology from July 2019 session. Currently five postgraduate seats have been approved per year. Presently 13 Junior Residents and 06 Senior Residents are working in the department.
Department has examined 72310 patients in outdoor with routine as well as complex ocular problems. 1156 Minor OPD procedure and 10881 Ophthalmic Investigations & Lasers has been done during the period of April 2023 to March 2024.
2323 major and 400 minor surgeries were performed by the department during 1st April 2023 to 31st March 2024.
1565 patients have been admitted in Day Care and 2850 patients has been admitted in IPD during the period of 1st April 2023 to 31st March 2024.
With constant effort of department and support of administration, cornea transplant services have been started in November 2022. With this, we will be able to cater corneal blind patients in more effective way. Process of setting up a state of art eye bank has been started so that patients need not be referred to other hospitals for these specialized services.
We serve a large referral base and patients travel long distance to take opinion and benefit from the expertise of our department. We get referral from whole Bihar, adjoining area of Jharkhand, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and even Nepal.
Our goal is to provide basic as well as subspecialty services of highest standard and develop it as apex centre in this region.
